When you are OVER analyzing it means analyzing has overstepped its boundaries and become excessive, compulsive, or uncontrollable. If you analyze anything to the point of exhaustion, until you can’t sleep, or to the point that your mind keeps on analyzing and won’t ‘stop’ – that’s overthinking, i.e. over analyzing.

Overthinking means your mind is analyzing too much, for too long, and in ways that are not helpful, are exhausting, or unproductive. It means it’s time to rest, change subjects, get out of your head, begin right-brain activities that are more ‘in-the-body’, creative, and focused on the present moment.

 

Unpleasant Mind Dwelling

Sometimes our minds return to a particular subject over and over again because something is incomplete or unsolved about the situation. Our mind is attempting to solve or resolve something.

It is not the mind’s tendency to return to a particular subject that is the problem. If you doubt this imagine your mind returning to a certain subject hundreds of times a day, and yet every time it does, you are filled with a feeling of joy, peace, and bliss.

It’s HOW the mind returns to a particular subject that makes all the difference. It is weather the process is productive or not, useful or not, pleasant or not that matters.

The answer to unpleasant mind-dwelling is to change HOW you’re thinking about a particular situation. In other words, make the way you’re thinking about it more pleasant, productive, and revealing. There are many processes that are useful for this, they include problem solving, mind-mapping, visualization, mindfulness, NLP processes, etc.

Unpleasantly dwelling on and returning mentally to a particular subject falls more into the category of ‘negative thinking’ and not overthinking. Worrying (imagining undesirable future outcomes), catastrophizing (imagining worst-case scenarios), and criticizing, condemning, and complaining are all examples of negative thinking.
