The 3 practices described below are all about how to stop overthinking at night.

All 3 of them must all be used in confluence in order for them to work. In other words, just doing one or two of them will be of no use to you.

Think of them as 3 parts in a 3-part system. All the parts need to be working because they very much affect one another. This will become clear as you look them over.

Creating a new evening routine will make a dramatic difference when it comes to how to stop overthinking at night.

But it is only one part of a 3-part system of things, and you MUST have all three.

In other words, no matter how good your evening routine is, it won’t work if you continue to do left brain, “put you in your head’ activities too late into the evening.

Certain activities will interrupt and mess with your right brain evening routine.

So it is essential that you identify and then STOP the left-brain activities you’re doing in the early evening and into the night.

First, list the left brain, thinking and analytical type activities you are currently doing after 5pm at night. Examples include:

Intellectual conversations of any kind on any subject
Reading material that causes you to have to think, analyze, or evaluate

Here are some other tips for STOPPING your left-brain habits in the evening:

Have a set ‘cut off’ time after which you always stop doing left-brain, thinking-type activities.

Deliberately interrupt thoughts of those left-brain subjects and begin a right brain activity immediately.

Practice shifting gears for a while. (see #2 below for a list of right brain activities to consider)

Write down in a notebook anything that’s still on your mind before you go to sleep. We write things down to forget them.

This will allow your mind to relax. However, you must keep your agreement with yourself and look over what you wrote down first thing in the morning for this to work. Build integrity with your subconscious mind.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it – is to pick at least 3 right brain activities and start doing them every evening from now on.

Cycle through a bunch of them and find out which ones work best for you. Make it a fun project. Make your own list. Right-brain activities are very relaxing and enjoyable by nature.

Overthinking is a massive problem in our society.

This is because western culture has made a "False God" of reason.

Our entire educational system is obsessed with analysis to the exclusion of intuitive understanding, creative right brain processes, and insight.

The irony is that true critical thinking actually has a FEEL to it.

You should be surprised if you do NOT overthink. It is highly unusual in a culture that is so inundated with overthinking and over analyzing.

The danger is that overthinking easily turns into negative thinking.

Before you know it, you've picked up a pattern of being hypercritical, negative, fault-finding, blaming, condemning, and most of all COMPLAINING.

Complaining is a disease in our culture.

Complaining manifests MORE of what you're complaining about because when you complain, you're putting your attention on what you do not want.

The result of all of this is a massive epidemic of depression, anger, hostility, stress, insomnia, anxiety, and the inability to truly relax.

Feelings of genuine peace, joy, bliss, happiness, enthusiasm, and equanimity are all but inaccessible when thinking has become OVER thinking.

But there is a solution.

You can learn to interrupt overthinking by learning some simple patterns and integrating some genuine Right Brain Activities into your lifestyle.
